S, a student from an international school in China, is about to enter 11th grade and has excellent grades in school, with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Although he is a top student, he is a little bit worried as he prepares for higher education. Why?
College Application Goals:
Carnegie Mellon University, UC Berkeley and Other TOP 30 Universities
S plans to apply to Carnegie Mellon University, UC Berkeley, and UCLA, which are three universities with strong computer and math majors. S has already done in-depth investigation of the three universities.
According to S., many of the math professors at these universities are great and have profoundly influenced modern advanced mathematics research, such as Prof. Tao at UCLA and Prof. Luo at CMU, whom he likes very much.
International School does not offer AP Calculus BC in 11th grade
Take additional math courses through SMOA Online U.S. High School
If students want to apply to the math majors of their dream school, universities have high requirements for the difficulty of the math courses they take in high school, and with an A+ and a 4.0 GPA in Precalculus in 10th grade, S. has already established a good foundation in math.
In order to improve the difficulty of S’s course selection and to prepare for the AP exam next May, S chose to take the AP Calculus BC course at SMOA Online U.S. High School during the summer vacation.
Elite foreign teachers + bilingual head teachers give strong support
Help students get A+, and GPA of 5.0.
SMOA Online U.S. High School has a team of elite foreign teachers, all selected by St. Mary’s School, more than 85% of master’s degree or doctoral degree, with an average of more than 5 years of online teaching experience, especially with a wealth of experience in teaching Chinese students, the students can adapt more quickly.
In addition, each student is equipped with a Chinese-English bilingual head teacher, who provides 24/7 effective supervision during the whole learning process, not only reminding students to attend classes and complete their homework on time, but also helping students and parents to communicate with the foreign teachers, sharing their children’s learning reports every week, and providing timely warnings of problems with their grades.
The support of the foreign teachers and the bilingual head teacher once again activated S’s attribute of academic excellence. His weekly learning report grades were all A+, and his GPA got a perfect 5.0, which made him a particularly proud student of both the foreign teachers and the bilingual head teacher!
Here’s what S. shared about his tips for getting an A+:
Before each class, prepare for what you are going to learn today, and look up any math terms you haven’t seen before to make sure they won’t interfere with your understanding in class.
In class, when the teacher explains the concepts, use some real-life examples in your mind to help you understand these highly abstract math concepts. When the teacher explains the examples, try to write notes on the purpose and logic of each step, so that you can easily review them before you are ready to write your assignments.
For after-school assignments, understand the examples given by the teacher thoroughly before starting to complete the assignment. This will greatly increase the efficiency of doing the assignment, as well as allowing you to clearly compare the similarities and differences between your own ideas and steps in solving the problem and those of the teacher.
